Shayla C. Nunnally

Shayla C. Nunnally is an Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in Political Science and African American Studies. She is a summa cum laude graduate from North Carolina Central University (Durham, NC). She received her M.A. and Ph.D. in political science at Duke University. She is a 2004-2005 Erskine A. Peters Fellow in African American Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Her dissertation, “‘In Whom Do We Trust?’: The Effect of Racial Socialization on African American Perceptions of Trust,” examines the relationship between African Americans’ racial socialization and their political trust.

She is the recipient of several academic awards and a community service award at Duke University. Her research interests include African American public opinion and political development and intergroup relations and political attitudes among racial and ethnic groups. She has several papers in progress related to these topics. She has taught as an adjunct lecturer at North Carolina Central University and as a teaching assistant with the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute in Political Science at Duke University.
